Front Cover Photo Plan

For my photos I will be taking photos of my friends Menna Jones, Rachel Ford, Beth-Anne Horton and Elly Cocks. I have asked these people to be in my photos because I know that they like the genre of music that my magazine is, and I think that they would look good on the front cover. They are all girls because it's mainly girls who like the genre of music, although boys do like it too but they would be more likely to buy the magazine if there is females on the front. I will be doing medium-long shots with some pictures with eye contact and some without, as some pictures are lighthearted, because I don't want it to be too serious. I have looked at magazines for ideas of what to do. I will take them in different poses and wearing different clothes, because I think that if they wear things and look how they would look on an everyday basis then it will appeal to more people.

Treatment for Music Magazine Production

Title of my Production
I am going to name my magazine Acapella, as that is the title that the people in my questionnaire thought was the best name.

Genre
The genre of my magazine will also be acapella, as an acapella magazine doesn't exist, so I thought it would be interesting to make one.

Brand Identity and Values
My magazine will believe in connecting with the audience, by having a section where they can send in letters and get a reply from the editor, and also by promoting the social media for the magazine, so that people can get in touch. My magazine will also stand for promoting the best and most popular acapella groups, as well as the new up and coming groups, as new acts that might not have as many fans are just as important. It values the readers, the content in the magazine and the artists that are also in the magazine.

Contents featured in my Magazine
My magazine will feature popular and up and coming artists in thee acapella genre. It will also include popular things at the moment, such as tours happening, and also talk about popular things going on within social media, and within acapella groups.

Intended target audience
My intended target audience is going to be people aged between 15 - 30 because acapella music has only really become more popular, so its more of the younger generation that will prefer and be more interested in the magazine. However I think there may be a few people who read the magazine that don't fit into the target audience.

Representations
The people represented in my magazine will be popular and also upcoming artists that people will want to know about, and they will be represented in a in a positive manner. They will be represented exactly how they are. The people that read the magazine will fit into Group D of the jicnar scale, as my magazine is aimed at young people. I will be representing both male and female. They will be aged between 16-24. They will be shown wearing understated casual clothing which is representative of the attitude and demeanor of artists from the Acapella genre.

How my Magazine will look
My  magazine will be bold and bright, so that it stands out from other magazines. It will also have sans-serif font, because it gives it a more modern look which will appeal to my target audience more than if I used a serif font. I will include interesting headlines, images and also pull quotes so that people will be more interested in reading my magazine.

Questionnaire Results

Most people were 26-36
I asked people how old they were so that I could get a clear idea on the ages of people that were answering the questions, rather than just trying to remember from my head how old most people were.

Most people did it based on the images
I asked this because I thought that it would help me have a better idea on what people prefer when they buy magazines, and also to find out what people want on a front cover.

Acapella was thee preferred magazine name
I asked what name people liked the best because I thought if I chose a name that the majority of people like, then when it comes to selling my magazine most people in the shops will like the name too.

Most people went to concerts once every 6 months
I thought this would be a good question to ask because it will tell me if I should include reviews of concerts inside my magazine or not.

Most people were female
I thought this was important because it will help me decide on what gender the majority of people answering my questions were, so it will tell me what females liked more.

Most people preferred rock music
I asked this question so that I could find out what people were more interested in when it came to music, and what they were more likely to read.

Most people were unemployed
I wanted to know the occupation of the people answering my questions, so that I could base my results from this.

Most people thought that £2-£4 was reasonable to pay
I wanted to know how much to sell my magazine for, and I thought the best way of finding out would be to ask people what they would pay for it.

Most people read/buy a magazine monthly
I wanted to know how often people buy magazines, so that I could choose how often to put a new magazine on sale.

Most people didn't go on magazine websites
I wanted to know if it was worth my time making a website for my magazine, or if people wouldn't use it.

Ideology of Q

Q magazine's brand identity is that they are a modern, up to date magazine. It focuses it's content on current popular artists from many genres. Q think that the most popular music or artists at the moment is important, and something that people need to know. The core readers would be young people, as they are more up to date with what's popular, so they would be aged between 15-30. The core readers will also like pop, rock, indie and artists from other genres. There are always interviews in Q, along with articles about live shows and new albums. Their layout features bold colors to make it stand out against the rest.

Ideology of NME

The brand identity of NME is presented as being interesting, out there and modern. It stands out against the rest of the magazines, because it's bright and bold. They make sure they have popular artists at the time on their front cover, and featured in their magazine, and to them that's important. It focuses it's content on rock, pop and indie artists. The core readers will be readers that value rock, pop and indie music, and the main readers will be the ones that have that type of music in their everyday lives. NME values the role that music plays as part of our lives, and talks about live music and recorded music, so that the core readers get a taste of everything going on. The name NME stands for national music express, and is aimed towards people that are aged 16-30. Judging by the style of the magazine ut us targeted at males mainly, The layout and style of the magazine is made so that it stands out and appeals to the target audience and the core readers, because this means that they will be more likely to buy the magazine. They value their audience and what they like so they try to build a relationship with them about what they like and what they want to see.

Kerrang! Media Pack

This is a media pack for Kerrang! Magazine. A media pack is something that people who want to advertise in a magazine look at. It's useful for them because it allows them to see how many people their advertisement will reach. It also allows them to see if their advertisement will be relevant to the age of the people that read the magazine.

Kerrang! Analysis

Representation

Representation is the way that in that institutions present people and the world. It's a mediated sense of reality. There is a triangular relationship between the producer, the media text and the audience.
The media usually focus on a persons:

Age
Gender
Race
Job
Sexuality
Social Class
Disability

We have to think about the following questions when analyzing representation:

Who or What is being represented?
What are they doing?
Why are they being represented that way?

Target Audience Questions

What genre of music magazine are you going to be constructing?

The genre of my magazine will be acapella.

Will it be for a mainstream or niche audience? Why?

My magazine will be for a niche audience because acapella isn't really mainstream and it's quite a small genre compared to pop or rock.

Is it similar to any existing products or is it going to be different? Explain how and why.

It's going to be different because there isn't any acapella magazines out there that you can buy from your local shop, so it's going to be very different.

Who will the core reader of your magazine be? What artists do they like? How do they dress? Where do they
shop? What products do they own or aspire to own? How do they spend their time? Try and establish a profile of who they are.

The core reader of my magazine will be people that are fans of acapella music, and will probably like artists such as Pentatonix, Cimorelli, Nota, and other artists that do acapella music. Acapella music doesn't really have a way for people to dress, because they cover different genres of music and there isn't really a set place where they would shop either. They probably spend a lot of their time listening to music and being creative. My target audience are going to be energetic, lively, people who like going out and who also like things such as technology, gigs, live music, festivals, watching the latest film or TV Show and similar things.

Who will be your primary and secondary audience?

My primary audience will be people who are fans of acapella music, because that's who I'm aiming my magazine at. My secondary audience will be people that enjoy different types of music and also creativity.

What will their age ranges be?

The age range of the people who read my magazine will be wide, from 13 - 25, as acapella music can be enjoyed by everyone.

What will be the gender mix?

The gender mix will be a mixture of male and female, with mainly females reading it.

What will be the socio-economic mix?

The socio-economic mix will be people who are from the C2/D/E group, because they have more time to listen to and enjoy music.

How do you know this?

I know this because a lot of people who are in the A/B group are older people who are professionals, who enjoy music more suited for their age and what they grew up with, rather than new music that is coming out now.

School Magazine Masthead Ideas

These are my ideas for my school magazine masthead and also names.

The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is the one of the most well known principles of composition in photography.

Rule of Thirds grid
The rule of thirds is breaking down an image into 9 parts, this helps you see what the most important part of the image is. This tells you where you should try to place the more important parts of your picture.

People say that if you place the points of the picture that are more interesting along the lines your photo is more balanced and also more interesting. When people are looking at a picture they tend to look at one of the points of interest first instead of looking directly at the center without really noticing.

Landscape example
Portrait example

Both of these pictures show that the points of interest, such as the boat in the landscape example and the eyes of the man in the portrait example, are in line with the lines of the rule of thirds grid.

Counterpoints

When you are using the rule of thirds grid, you can use a counterpoint. What this means is you have a primary focal point and then you place a secondary focal point directly opposite it. This enhances your composition and also makes your picture more interesting.

Photo Plan

I will take pictures of my friends in Sixth Form, and I will take the pictures in the Common Room and outside, My magazine is primarily for Sixth Form students and their parents. They will be smiling and laughing, reading and in the classroom learning. I plan to do an eye level picture or mid shot. I will need to make sure that there's enough space so that I don't need to crop part of the image that I want. The picture needs to be portrait so that it fits the magazine cover properly. I will take pictures this week. I need to organize when I can take the pictures, by seeing when my friends are free and not busy so I can take their photos. I need to also make sure that the lighting is good, because if it's too bright or too dark the picture won't look too good.

Magazine Cover.

Magazine Mastheads.

The title Kerrang! suggests that the magazine is rebellious and outlandish. It also suggests that it’s a magazine for bold people, because the title is in capitals and has an exclamation point at the end. It also suggests that because of the cracked effect  gives the ides that music should be loud, and that also goes with their motto of ‘Life is Loud’, and their masthead shows that they are living up to their own expectations of life being loud, and rock music should also be loud. Kerrang also uses a sans-serif font to give it a more modernized look.

The title Mojo is written in a sans serif font, to give the impression that the magazine is for a younger audience. It uses a black colour on the font which also gives the idea that they are simplistic. The title is all in capitals to make it stand out from the rest of the magazines. Mojo can mean influence, so the use of the word Mojo for the title suggests that the magazine is supposed to influence the readers on their opinions. The masthead sits on the front of the magazine in the center, often with it on full display to catch peoples attention as they pass by. Mojo calls themselves the worlds best music magazine, implying that the only information you need about music will be in there. The magazine is based on classic rock, and they often have articles featuring famous musicians, as well as them being on the cover. The magazine is mainly for people who listen to classic rock, but because it has a modern edge anyone from the ages of 20-40 might read it.
Classic FM uses a serif style font. It also uses all black for the name, apart from the F to add contrast to the title. They also include the FM in the title of the magazine to promote their radio station at the same time. The title Classic FM tells us instantly that the magazine is about Classical music. There is clear gaps between each letter, which could be to make it clearer to read and recognizable. The masthead sits at the top of the page and at times has a white background on it, so that it's easy for people to read when there is a dark picture on the cover, or they put it over the image so you can still easily find it. Classic FM is a magazine about classical music, and is targeted at older people aged 40-60. They stopped publishing the magazine in 2012. They reviewed classical music recordings, recent performances and sometimes they also gave out music with their magazines.
Vibe magazine uses a sans-serif font for the title. The title is also in capital letters and block colouring. Depending on the cover, they use different colours for each issue. They usually switch between white, red, blue and black. The word vibe can mean to enjoy listening or dancing to popular music, and that's the impression that the title gives us, the magazine has a cool vibe about it and features popular music acts on the cover each issue. They mainly feature rap and hip hop artists, actors and other entertainers. The intended audience is younger readers aged 16-24 as the magazine has a modern vibe and features the most popular people and acts at the time.
RollingStone magazine uses a serif-style font for their title. They often use different colours for their title, but always keep the way it looks the same. The title RollingStone is easy to remember because it reminds people of the popular band. It also means a person who doesn't settle in one place for too long, much like musicians. They use a black outline around the title to make it look bolder and stand out more. The title is often placed over the image on the front cover. The magazine mainly focuses on music, culture and politics. Their intended audience is people aged 20-30. However, they changed their ideas to appeal to the younger people and made it about TV Shows, popular acts and films but then decided to change it back to their old topics.
NME uses a sans-serif font with capital letters. It uses the colour red with white and black to contrast with it and make the actual name of the magazine stand out. NME is targeted towards the younger generation so making the masthead bright and colourful will attract the younger people. NME is largely associated with rock, indie and alternative music.
Rock Sound magazine uses a sans-serif font which makes it more modern and simple, which could be to attract the younger audience. They also promote their website by putting rocksound.tv around the R of rock. Rock Sound focus mainly on pop, pop punk, punk, emo, hardcore, post-hardcore, heavy metal and other types but they rarely talk about indie music. Their tag line is 'For those who like their music loud extremist and non-conformist' which gives the impression straight away that their magazine is for people who like loud rock music. Their magazine is mainly aimed at young people aged 16-24.
Q magazine uses a serif style font, but is still simple and modern looking. It uses a red background to contrast with the white Q. The Q also has shadowing around it to make it stand out more. Q has a review section, where they review music, films, concerts, radio and television. They also do articles such as cash for questions, where popular celerities and musicians answer questions from the public who get £25 if their question is printed. Q is aimed at most people, but their readers range from 20-40.
